Based closely on the popular Concept X6, BMW introduced the X6 crossover coupe for 2009 model year, calling it a "Sport Activity Coupe." In addition to the external nature is a new twin-turbo V8 that will find its way into other BMW in the years to come.

BMW is the first automaker to introduce a SUV on the market, although other automakers are said to be planning cut-like vehicles. Land Rover, for example, recently unveiled its LRX coupe crossover concept.

Compared with the concept, very little has changed. In fact, you will have difficulty noticing the differences at all. The only evidence of design has been made to alter the binding of the side windows. On the concept, the B-and C-pillars are not visible, but on the car they clearly divide the glass.

Bold design

The new X6 is longer and lower than the new X5, only four seats. But what sport X6 loses in seating and storage, it gains in performance.

Brand new twin-turbo V8

The range-topping X6 xDrive50i is powered by an all-new twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 unit producing 407 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 446 lb-ft of torque between 1750 rpm and 4500 rpm. The sprint to 62 mph takes just 5.4 seconds and fuel economy is estimated at about 19 mpg (U.S. gallons).

The engine is designed as a replacement for the company's current 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V8. It is expected to filter into other models like the 5-Series 6-Series and 7-Series in the near future.

The engine seems to be the second stage of a shift at BMW from high-displacement engines naturally aspirated a little smaller turbocharged engines. BMW's twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine powers the 335i and 135i has been met with very positive comments, and it appears BMW is hoping for similar results with its new V8.

The X6's other engine is also a bi-turbo configuration. The xDrive35i comes with the 3.0-liter inline-six from the 335i, producing 306 horsepower.

A diesel model is available in Europe, but it is coming, unlike America in the near future.
